A popular tourist destination in Essex has been named one of the UK's best zoos. New research by Outdoor Toys looked at zoos across the UK and their admission prices, reviews and the number of species that visitors can see.

Colchester Zoo was found to be one of the top-rated when considering TripAdvisor reviews. It had an average review of 4.5 according to the study.

There are more than 150 species of animals for visitors to Colchester Zoo to enjoy. They include family favourites such as chimpanzees, cheetahs and African elephants.

The list of on-site is always growing too with red piranha added earlier this month as well as a baby spider monkey and four pygmy marmosets who transferred from Chester Zoo. Colchester Zoo's reputation spreads far beyond Essex with it rated as the 13th best Zoo in Europe.

Luke Wilkinson, Visitor Services Manager at the Zoo, previously said: "It’s great to be recognised by our loyal supporters with comments posted on TripAdvisor as we work towards being a top conservation Zoo in the UK and worldwide. We read through each and every review and always enjoy sharing positive comments with our hard-working team as well as taking onboard feedback constructively to help improve our visitor experience."

Standard admission to Colchester Zoo costs just £28.50 for an adult (16-59) and £21 for a child (3-15) when purchasing on the day of visit. An advance ticket for a weekday visit is discounted to £24.23 for adults and £17.85 for children. Parking at Colchester Zoo is free.
