New collaborative care clinic in Antigonish will serve 10,000 patients

A new collaborative care clinic is set to open in Antigonish, N.S., in 2025 and serve over 10,000 patients, but it's unclear how many people the clinic will help get off the provincial need-a-family-practice registry.

In a news release, the province said the clinic will have more than 30 health-care professionals and support staff, as well as close to 30 exam rooms. The staffing includes doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers and dietitians.

"Some patients will come in, they'll follow their primary care provider," Health Minister Michelle Thompson told CBC News. "There will be capacity to see other people who are currently in need of a family practice [doctor]."

As of June 1, there were about 160,000 Nova Scotians on the waitlist for a family physician.

The area covering Antigonish and Guysborough counties has more than 18,000 people on the list.
