A Huddersfield college boss has apologised over a diary mix-up which could mean some students missing the first day back after summer.

Earlier this year Greenhead College in Huddersfield wrongly told first-year sixth form students to return on Monday, September 2. The wrong date was announced during the principal's assembly in March.

But on Monday, July 8 parents were told by college principal Simon Lett - who is leaving the college this summer - that the correct start date is actually Friday, August 30.

Parents were said to be "confused" and "disappointed" by the mix-up, with one saying: "Who starts a new term on a Friday? Families have holidays at the end of August. This smacks of poor planning by the college. It's disappointing and it isn't helpful."

Mr Lett messaged parents on Monday and offered his 'huge apologies' and said he realised some families will already have made plans for the week that ends on August 30.

He said: "I am sorry for this confusion, but, to clarify, the definitive date is the one above."

In a statement, a spokesman for Greenhead College confirmed the correct start date is August 30 and an apology has been issued.

They said: "In March 2024, Greenhead College incorrectly stated in an assembly to first-year students that they would be starting their second year on Monday, 2 September 2024. However, the correct start date will be Friday, 30 August.

"This is not unusual, as the College has always brought back returning students during the last week of August for the start of teaching. Term dates for the 2024-25 academic year were published on our website in October 2023.

"The College has apologised to students and parents/carers for the incorrect date being given out in the assembly. Should any student be unable to attend on the Friday due to scheduled commitments, this will not affect their attendance.

"We look forward to welcoming our students back on Friday, 30 August and wish them a good summer holiday."
