Fans and the curious are getting a chance to delve into the world of comic books this weekend thanks to a local store.

Justice Comics in Stirling’s Arcade is taking part in Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 5.

With a selection of free comics available throughout the day, it is a great opportunity for people who have thought about trying comics.

Brian King of Justice Comics said: “I have arranged for some Ghostbusters to wander about the town and promote the event.

“People can come into the shop and select any five of the comics available and some of the titles on offer are: Absolute Power from DC Comics which is a preview of this summer’s comic book event; there is a preview for the comic starring the 15th Doctor from Doctor Who with the series launching in June 2024; there will be a Star Wars comic with a couple of short stories featuring Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

“For the younger readers there is a Snoopy Comic, a Spidey and his Amazing Friends comic, and some other titles.

“Only comics with the Free Comic Book Day logo apply to the offer.

“Comics are a superb form of entertainment with something suitable for all ages covering all genres from superheroes to sci-fi, crime and fantasy.

“Fans enjoy the combination of strong writing and art. With the vast different styles of writing and art, there is something for everyone.

“Some teams like Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale - Batman Long Halloween - and Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips - the Reckless Series - for example are two examples of a combination of a writer/artist team who I describe as a ‘safe pair of hands’, always bring out a comic that is going to be worth reading.

“A few other writers who are worth looking out for are James Tynion IV, Tom King, Mark Waid, Tom Taylor, Jeff Lemire, Dan Slott and Jonathan Hickman and a few artists, Alex Ross, Mark Bagley, Danial Sampere, Mike Perkins and Dan Mora.

“There is also the excitement of seeing our favourite characters in their latest adventure.

“Some of the comic book characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman - who have been around for more than 80 years - and Spider-Man, Daredevil and Hulk - who have been around for more than 60 years - new writers and artists come along and bring a fresh take on these established characters, which keeps the comic industry evolving and bring something new and exciting to look forward to.”

He added: “There are also some great female writers such as Devin Grayson, Gail Simone, Kelly Thompson, Melissa Marr and Amy Wolfram and female artists such as Amanda Conner, Nicola Scott, Jill Thompson and Sara Pichelli.

“Some comic fans like to follow writers, artists or characters around and there are some who will collect comics combining all three.”
