A flower expert has revealed that a common kitchen spice could be a "game-changer" for geraniums as the warmer months of the year approach. Known for their bright blooms and hardy nature, geraniums are a favourite in many UK gardens during the summer.

Yet, they can sometimes suffer in the peak of summer heat without the right care. However, an easy and effective tip involving cinnamon has been suggested to help keep your geraniums thriving and more robust against the summer warmth, according to Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers, in a conversation with Devon Live.

She explained: "Cinnamon isn't just for your morning porridge, it's also a potent natural remedy for your plants and a fantastic tool for gardeners. It has natural anti-fungal properties that help protect plants from diseases and promote healthy growth. Using cinnamon on your geraniums can be a game-changer, especially during the summer when the weather can be a bit unpredictable."

How to use cinnamon on geraniums.

Elise outlined the straightforward technique for applying cinnamon to your geraniums, advising: "Sprinkle a light dusting of cinnamon on the soil around your geraniums or directly on the plant's stems and leaves. This helps prevent fungal infections and deters pests. For best results, do this early in the morning or late in the evening when the dew is still on the plants, so the cinnamon sticks better.", reports the Express.

Cinnamon can also be used to treat cuts or damage to your plants. "If you're pruning your geraniums or notice any broken stems, dust the wound with cinnamon to promote healing and prevent rot," she added.

Other benefits of cinnamon for your garden.

Cinnamon's benefits extend beyond just your geraniums, as it can help deter pests like ants and gnats, which are common nuisances in summer gardens. "Sprinkling cinnamon around the base of your plants or even creating a cinnamon barrier can keep these unwanted guests at bay," Elise said.

More geranium-boosting hacks.

While cinnamon is a fantastic hack, there are several other tips you can use to keep your geraniums thriving this summer.

She added: "Gardening doesn't have to be complicated. With a few simple tricks and a bit of cinnamon, you can keep your geraniums-and your entire garden-looking spectacular all summer."
