Computershare plans to move into former Skipton cotton mill

FINANCIAL services company Computershare is planning to move from Gateway House at the entrance to Skipton to new offices in the centre of town.

The company has submitted plans to North Yorkshire Council to make changes to two floors at Belle Vue Square, Broughton Road, the former Dewhurst's Mill.

Computershare has applied for both planning and listed building consent for mechanical improvements to the second and third floor of the building, which was the home of the former Craven District Council and now, following local government reorganisation, is home to the Craven office of North Yorkshire Council.

In a design, access and heritage statement submitted with the application, the company's agents, Rance Booth Smith Architects, say the existing office space needs the upgrading of mechanical services to fulfil the needs of its client.

It will mean the fitting of plant equipment and a generator on the outside of the building and the introduction of louvres to a number of 'high level panels within existing window frames'.

It states: "Internally, the space will remain as office space, with new partitions and doors added to suit the required layout. Internal finishes and lighting will also be upgraded. This will involve alterations to existing partition walls and existing finishes – all of which are modern and installed as part of a previous refurbishment."

Access to and around the building will remain the same, with the exception of the extension of the existing plant area, which will mean the loss of a parking space.

It adds: "It is considered that the proposed mechanical services improvements to the second and third floor office areas will not have an adverse affect on the listed building or have a detrimental impact on the setting or surrounding area."

It is proposed that fit-out work will be 'highly energy efficient' including user controlled window blinds, highly efficient insulation, comfort cooling and mechanical ventilation.

Gateway House, formerly the home of Homeloan Management Ltd, is owned by Skipton Building Society which says it continues to use the building for functional business requirements, and with regards to Computer Share’s plans does not have any changes planned for the building.

In late 2020, Computershare moved out of Gateway House to new premises in Crossflatts, but, in the following year, came back to Skipton to its former site.

A spokesperson for Computershare said: "Like any company we’re constantly monitoring our footprint to better suit the needs of our business, which includes researching the options available to us in our local area."
