As Scotland wakes up today to a new Labour government, it feels like a fresh start for the whole country.

But as Keir Starmer reflects on a job well done in getting Labour back in power, he can’t spend time celebrating. A massive rebuilding job is now required following 14 damaging years of Conservative rule at Westminster.

It’s not just the economy and our austerity-ravaged public services that urgently need remedial work, there is a desperate need to rebuild trust and confidence in our political system. Many Scots chose not to vote after becoming disillusioned by years of broken promises from politicians.

And given the record of the departing Tory government, it’s little wonder they stopped caring about a system that seemed uninterested in them. It’s now up to Prime Minister Starmer to get the public onside and prove that responsible government is both possible and desirable.

But after the years of chancers like Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, it will be no easy task. Scots have had to stand and watch as a Tory-run circus in London made Britain a laughing stock.

The Conservatives dragged us out of the European Union after a campaign filled with lies and exaggerations. They have also tried to shift the blame for soaring food costs and energy bills on anyone but them.

As we all obeyed the Covid rules, they partied in the garden at No10 as if nothing was amiss, while top Tories were exposed for sleazy underhand dealings and profiteering with their “VIP lanes” for providing dodgy PPE equipment.

Chaos and corruption are what that old Conservative government will be most remembered for. Thankfully, there is a real opportunity to restore faith in our political process. We will have a new prime minister who has built his career on public service.

Starmer has a hard-won reputation for honesty and decency. These are values that must underpin a Labour government as it takes power. The UK is crying out for a period of calm professionalism and competence from our elected politicians.

A government committed to growing the economy while restoring public services so they benefit everyone. The constant stream of Tory incompetence has provided the Daily Record with plenty of front page news.

We sincerely hope that a more stable, sensible government committed to the welfare of ordinary people will result in a less fevered political atmosphere. Labour must act quickly to show how it will govern differently. It must offer tangible evidence of why it mattered so much to get rid of the Tories.

The country can’t tolerate business as usual. Starmer’s team’s win must draw an era of chaos in Downing Street to a close. Let us hope this Labour government is the beginning of a new chapter for Scotland and the UK.
