Controlled Demolition Crumbles Retired Coal Power Plant in West Virginia

The former Philip Sporn power plant in Letart, West Virginia, was demolished in a scheduled implosion on Saturday, December 17.

The 280 acre retired coal-fired plant stood for more than 60 years, ceasing operation in 2015.

Video by Robert Titus, recorded from the opposite bank of the Ohio River, shows the plant crumble in a large dust cloud.

Frontier Group of Companies, which acquired the site in 2019, said it would be repurposed and operational by 2024. Credit: Robert Titus via Storyful
