‘Who is who?’ Coons posts photo with ‘doppelgänger,’ German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) shared a photo online with his “doppelgänger,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is in Washington for a White House meeting.

“Wer ist wer?” Coons posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The English translation is “Who is who?” Coons, with a U.S. flag lapel pin, is on the left in the photo.

Scholz is set to speak with President Biden as tensions rise in Europe over Congress’s inability to pass new aid for Ukraine in its war against Russia, The Associated Press reported Friday.

The German chancellor arrived in the United States to argue that a win for Russia in the war would be harmful to the West and its allies. He also is likely arguing that Germany has continued to send money to Ukraine despite having budget constraints, the AP reported.

Scholz shared a photo of him and Coons smiling for a selfie Thursday evening.

“Great to see my Doppelgänger again – @ChrisCoons!” Scholz said in his post.

Coons is one of 11 Democrats on the Foreign Relations Committee. The Senate has been swamped in high-stakes negotiations over the last couple of weeks, as GOP members blocked the bipartisan border security deal Wednesday that has been in the works for months.

The Senate voted Thursday evening to advance a $95 billion emergency security spending bill, of which $60 billion will go to support the war in Ukraine, but the upper chamber did not come to a conclusion on the border security portion of the bill, and doubts remain whether it will earn enough support from Republicans.
