Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street is set to update fans on Peter Barlow in a new story following his departure.

Chris Gascoyne bowed out from the role of Peter in December last year, with his final scenes airing in the show's Boxing Day episode.

The long-running character notably left Weatherfield to travel around the world on a yacht with a friend, after his wife Carla decided to buy him a one-way ticket out of town.

Peter's son Simon has since struggled with his dad's absence. His difficulties soon led him to start drinking heavily, which resulted in his recent involvement in a drink-driving incident that put Sam Blakeman in danger.

Ahead of actor Alex Bain's own departure as Simon after 16 years, the character will face a tough decision after Peter offers Simon a job on his yacht.

In scenes set to air on Friday, May 24, Carla begins to reflect on her relationship with Peter after learning that he invited Simon to come and work on the yacht.

In a heartfelt conversation, Carla then admits to Sarah that she misses Peter, despite him ending their marriage at Christmas when he left the Street.

Later, when Simon shows Carla pictures of his dad's travels, she is shocked to see one of Peter with his arm around a woman.

As she questions whether Peter has moved on, will the picture encourage Carla to do the same?

Gascoyne's decision to bow out from Coronation Street was announced in July 2023, before he filmed his final scenes in late October.

Despite Peter's return being left open by soap bosses, Gascoyne previously revealed he didn't know if or when he would reprise his role, saying: "Of course I've not ruled [a return] out – it's been such a part of my life.

"I've grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I'm not getting any younger. The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I worked with and I don't just mean the actors. I've known all these people for nearly half my life."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
