Coronation Street kicks off Ryan Connor's dark new storyline

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street will begin airing the first scenes in Ryan Connor's sad new storyline next week, as he takes drastic measures to try to regain his self-confidence.

Ryan became the victim of an acid attack earlier this year after he stepped in to protect Daisy Midgeley, when her stalker Justin Rutherford threw acid at her on her wedding day.

The attack left Ryan with facial scars and he has been struggling with his confidence ever since, particularly after a nasty customer at The Bistro complained about his appearance.

Last week saw Ryan head off to Ireland to visit his mum Michelle for a break away from Weatherfield, and when he returns next week his dark new storyline will begin as he puts himself in serious danger.

When Ryan returns home from Ireland, he tells Carla Barlow that he's having some new exercise equipment delivered. Carla suggests that Ryan should make motivational videos, but Ryan's adamant that nobody would want to see his face on screen.

Later in the week, Daisy tries to chat to Ryan, but he gives her short shrift after their previous arguments over Daisy catfishing Ryan as Ibiza club promoter Crystal. Daisy feels hurt by Ryan's dismissive attitude towards her.

Actor Ryan Prescott, who plays Ryan, spoke to Digital Spy and other media earlier this year about the impact that the acid attack will have on Ryan in the long-term, explaining that the incident will change "the way he interacts with the world".

"Your face is the first thing you see when you get up and look in the mirror," he said. "It's your first means of communication and it's the thing you most readily identify with yourself. So when that changes, everything changes."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
