Coronation Street star details DS Swain daughter's involvement with Joel and relationship after tragic death

Coronation Street star Vicky Myers has spoken more about her character's daughter following her official arrival onto our screens and the difficult relationship they share after a shared tragic loss.

It was revealed that the actress had been made a series regular in the role of DS Lisa Swain earlier this year. And it was just last month that viewers of the ITV soap first learnt Swain had a daughter.

The news about Swain came out as, despite Swain being the reason Carla Connor's friend Roy Cropper was behind bars, charged with the suspected murder of missing teen Lauren Bolton, Carla was seen being sympathetic to the stressed-out detective and mum.

In return for being a sympathetic ear, despite Carla lying about her nephew Bobby Crawford's false statement to the police about the night Lauren disappeared in a bid to help Roy, Swain encouraged the newly freed street stalwart to make amends with Carla before the Underworld boss offered Swain’s daughter some work experience.

But before her first appearance in the factory, Betsy Swain was seen up to no good as she was seen blackmailing Joel Deering after his actions towards her mate Sabrina. As viewers know, the solicitor is not to be trusted after it was revealed he behind the disappearance - and assumed death - of Lauren.

And it appears Betsy already has his card marked as she pointed out to Sabrina Joel was a creep, warning she should steer clear. She took his card and pretended to chuck it in the bin, only to keep it for herself. Later, viewers seemingly saw why as the newcomer confronted Joel and tried to blackmail him, warning she has a "big gob" and would expose his creepy behaviour.

Joel furtively takes a call from Sabrina’s mate, telling him he has to meet her or he’ll regret it. However, Joel didn't listen and was seen enjoying an engagement meal with his new fiancée Dee-Dee Bailey's family And the joy was short-lived when Sabrina's mate entered the restaurant with Amy Barlow asking if she can help her to which she replies: "I'm here to see Joel."

Joel spun around and looked panicked as he spotted the young girl. He quickly made his excuses and headed over, warning: "What are you doing here?" The moment was witnessed by Dee-Dee, who looked over and seemed confused. Taking things outside, he warned her not to mess with him but did hand over the cash she was demanding. Soon after, Betsy was approached by Swain in the precint park, suggesting they go home.

Speaking about this chance to explore Swain's backstory and family life, Vicky told the Manchester Evening News and other press: "It's massively important. It's all about portraying truth and authenticity to characters that we play."

She continued, explaining more details about what has made her and Betsy the way they are: "The tragic death of Swain's partner Becky has had an impact on her relationship with Betsy. One of the questions that I ask myself is what the relationship was like before, when it was the three of them – and how it's changed and the impact that that would have had on Betsy.

"With Lisa, she did what she felt was the right thing to do and went back into work. Subconsciously she felt that was the right thing to do, but inadvertently it's pushed Betsy away – when she thought she was doing the right thing in protecting her. So there's so much to unpack between the two of them. It's full of fear, because they're both petrified of losing each other. It's all centred around love, because they love each other so much."

Vicky added: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree either, so Lisa can see a lot of herself in Betsy. She's a chip off the old block. She's feisty, intelligent, she's sarcastic, she's witty, she's humorous, she's got all of this going on.

"But Betsy is vulnerable, and she's not as worldly-wise as she thinks, whereas Lisa's obviously got that experience, especially in the profession that she's in. But also for Betsy, she's also watching her mum go to work in the profession that she'd lost her other mother in, so that's absolutely petrifying. To put it mildly, the relationship is strained and it's fractured because they're both vulnerable."

Commenting on Betsy's scheming and what Swain thinks of her involvement with Joel and Carla, with the teen sent to try get one up on the Underworld boss too Vicky told us: "I think now we know what we know about Joel, I don't think she'd care less. But seriously, I think she'd be absolutely furious because she has brought her up to know the difference between right and wrong and have morals.

"Also, the profession that she is in, it's not that this is something new to Betsy... But also with blackmail, it's contrived, there's a lot of thought that goes into it and it's ongoing. She'd want to know why, why she felt there was a need to do that, why she's doing it..." She added: "I think she'd be really disappointed. It would start with anger and fury but I think out of all of it, she'd be so bitterly disappointed in her behaviour."
