Coronation Street star Paddy Bever calls for new direction for Max

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Paddy Bever has called for a new direction involving his character, Max Turner.

The teenager has returned to Weatherfield following his spell at the STC, a consequence of his involvement with Griff Reynolds’ right-wing extremist group.

Bever, who debuted on the soap in 2021, spoke to Inside Soap about his Max’s reformation, and revealed he had an ideal occupation in mind for his character.

“When I first arrived, someone was showing me around and pointed to a tattoo parlour, saying no one works there,” he revealed. “So when Max is 18, if I’m fortunate enough to still be playing him, I think a tattoo parlour would be a really cool place for him to work.

“It’s the kind of art that attracts loads of people who are outcasts and misfits. And I think Max is most definitely one of those,” he added, before revealing what it has been like to work with Corrie legends Helen Worth and Sue Nicholls, who play Gail Platt and Audrey Roberts, respectively.

“I kind of assumed – wrongly – that people who are that successful would be too busy, but they always make time for other people and listen,” he said. “With Helen and Sue, getting to watch them on a daily basis and act alongside them is something that I’m still trying to get my head around.

“I’m so lucky. Sometimes when I’m watching Helen and Sue in a scene, I’m kind of in awe – and have to remember that I’m in the scene, too,” he added.

In recent scenes on the soap, Max gave ex-girlfriend Lauren Bolton an ultimatum as her father Reece tried to minimise his time behind bars; he subsequently ended up with an 18-year sentence, leaving Lauren devastated.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
