Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay reveals Shelley and Karen could have returned

Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay has suggested Shelley Unwin could have made a return to the show.

Lindsay played Shelley on the ITV soap for five years, before leaving in 2006. During her time on the Cobbles, she was landlady of the Rovers Return, and had relationships with Peter Barlow and Charlie Stubbs.

In an interview with Prima, Lindsay reflected on her time on Corrie, and what it’s like to watch back her old appearances.

She said: "I’m back on Coronation Street now in the classic episodes [on repeat] – Suranne [Jones, who played Karen McDonald] and I were watching it the other day, like ‘Oh my God.’

"But they were glorious times; I loved every minute. Suranne and Jennifer James [who played Geena Gregory] are still my best friends – we just had a weekend away in Norfolk together."

She said she would have loved to return to the show alongside close pal Suranne Jones, whose character was married to Steve McDonald, to say goodbye to another iconic character.

Lindsay said: "I definitely would have gone back to Corrie for Betty’s [played by the late Betty Driver] funeral because she was a very dear friend. Suranne said she would have done as well, but they never asked us…"

In the interview, where she also spoke about her Channel 5 crime drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries, Lindsay opened up about how she struggled in the years after she left Corrie.

"When I left Coronation Street, I had to start again," she said. "It was a nightmare because there was a global crash, so no telly was being made.

"It was a stupid time to leave, but I did loads of brilliant theatre and I had my boys. It was four years before I did big telly again."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
