Cait Fitton, who portrays Lauren Bolton on Coronation Street, has shared the harrowing details behind her character's sudden return to the streets of Weatherfield.

Viewers were left in suspense over Lauren's whereabouts after she disappeared earlier this year, but the mystery was resolved in the episode aired on Monday (July 8), which saw Lauren visiting Roy Cropper (David Neilson) in hospital following his heart attack.

The soap had led fans to believe Lauren might have met a tragic end, but it's now been confirmed that future episodes will delve into why Lauren stayed away after being viciously assaulted by the notorious groomer Joel Deering (Calum Lill).

Actress Cait opened up about the intense storyline, explaining, "Since Lauren has left Weatherfield, she's been running from hostel to hostel and also sleeping homeless. She's not been able to pay the rent and has been booted out of different hostels."

She further detailed Lauren's plight, saying, "Obviously now there are other precautions that Lauren has got to think about. She doesn't know where Joel is and she went through a near-death experience with him, so she doesn't want to take that risk or face that trauma again.", reports the Express.

Cait revealed Lauren's motivation: "Lauren decided to come back when she heard that Roy is in hospital. She knows that this has not just affected him mentally but now physically so she's like 'Right, I've got to go back and I've got to put things right. No matter what the consequences are, I've got to do it'. Roy was so important to her."

"Lauren is scared of letting people down. She knows she's going to get backlash from people because Roy is adored by everybody on the street she knows that's something she's going to have to face. She's in survival mode, but she always has been."

"I had to sneak in and out the building, getting lifts from Calum [Lill] but having to get in the boot to make sure I wasn't being seen."

"People would be at the front getting selfies, I'd be in the boot still. So it was a bit chaotic! It was like a massive game of twister in that boot, it was tiny."

"There were times when I had to get on the floor in a taxi, the driver was wondering what's going on and I'd just shout go go go! It was mad. Fun but mental. I never thought I would have to be doing that to get into work."

Fans are now worried about Lauren's well-being after she disappeared post a violent altercation with Joel they will all be waiting with bated breath to see his reaction upon her return.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
