Coronation Street star Cait Fitton has admitted that it wasn't easy filming her return scenes after viewers hailed her two-hander episode with co-star Calum Lill as the 'best episode in a long time'.

It was confirmed during Monday night's (July 8) edition of the ITV soap that Lauren Bolton, played by Cait, was still alive after disappearing from Weatherfield back in February.

As fans know, the teen disappeared without a trace after being sacked from her job at Roys Rolls and be visited by a mystery person. A missing persons case quickly turned into a murder probe after blood was found in Lauren's flat and it was Roy Cropper who became DS Lisa Swain's prime suspect.

However, it was revealed in flashback scenes aired in May that Roy was, as we all knew, innocent despite having already been charged with the suspected murder of Lauren. It was then confirmed that it was really Joel Deering who was her 'secret boyfriend' and had something to do with her sudden disappearance.

After making a swift exit from Roy's homecoming, after he was finally released from prison, Joel was met by Hope Stape who handed him a necklace that she found in his car when cleaning it, which viewers recognised belonged to Lauren. Then, a flashback clip revealed him to be Lauren's secret 'boyfriend' and saw him brutally attack her with a chair leg.

For months fans have been left to ponder whether Lauren had survived the ordeal and it was confirmed she did when she appeared by Roy's bedside in the hospital after he suffered a heart attack following a fresh confrontation with a group of yobs who targeted him over Lauren.

However, as she tried to make an exit from the hospital, she was grabbed by Joel who covered her mouth to cover her screams and dragged her into a family room where the truth about what happened between the pair before the shock attack was uncovered.

Flashbacks scattered throughout the episode unveiled the truth about Lauren's absence and her involvement with Joel. The wicked solicitor insinuated himself into Lauren's life, which started after he represented her at the police station. He described himself as her 'knight in shining armour' and it was long before he stepped in to assist with her bills, eventually manipulating her into a sexual relationship.

On the day she vanished, Joel lashed out violently at Lauren following a mention of his current fiancée, Dee-Dee Bailey. Joel took off, while Lauren feigned death and has since been in hiding, jumping from hostel to hostel, terrified for her safety. But the biggest twist was that the teen is now pregnant with Joel's baby.

Following the scenes, Cait took to social media to share her praise for the Coronation Street team as well as Joel co-star Calum Lill and share how grateful she was to be given the opportunity to be involved in one of the soap's biggest storylines. Sharing behind the scenes pictures from recording the flashback scenes, she said: "An appreciation post for everyone involved in tonight’s episode of @coronationstreet.
