Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has shared a big update about her time on the show. The actress joined the ITV soap last year as Cassie Plummer, the real mum of Tyrone Dobbs and daughter of Evelyn Plummer.

Claire made her debut on the cobbles back in June 2023 after her casting was revealed a year ago in April 2023. Viewers saw Cassie for the first time after she tracked down her mum to the street but when Evelyn spotted her, she ignored her. But later, Evelyn received a call and was seen hurrying into A&E reception, explaining that her daughter has been admitted as an emergency after she overdosed.

The pair then entered into an emotional confrontation as Cassie revealed she knew that she was living with Tyrone and had been keeping him from her for all these years. And things reached a heart-breaking climax when Evelyn emotionally confessed that Tyrone thinks his mum is dead. Cassie later revealed her identity to Tyrone and has since made herself part of his and his children's lives.

After a fraught start to their reunion, Evelyn and Cassie have become as thick as thieves with Cassie helping her mum try and bring down a cruel puppy farmer. However, she has had been sneakily meddling in Kevin and Abi Webster's relationship.

And Claire, 53, has now revealed she has signed to spend another year in Weatherfield. The former Brookside star told Cheshire Life Magazine: "I’ve just signed my contract for another year in Corrie and I’m really happy to fully invest all my time and energy into Cassie and see what develops.

"I couldn’t be happier about the acting scenes I have done recently in Coronation Street with Dame Maureen Lipman in the Rovers, and with Alan Halsall and Jennie McAlpine in the Dobbs household."

Reflecting on her introduction to the Salford-based soap, Claire continued: "When I first came in to Corrie, I did a 14-page scene with Maureen while my character was in hospital. Playing opposite such a phenomenal actor was a dream come true. The writing and direction for that episode was amazing. That is definitely one of my highlights."

It comes after Claire and boxer Ricky "Hitman" Hatton stepped out on the red carpet together for the first time. The pair met while taking part in Dancing on Ice earlier this year and have been spotted on a series of pub dates in recent weeks.

On Saturday night (April 20) they took the next step, going public with their romance at the big opening night of the £365m Co-op Live Arena. They both posted photos on their Instagram accounts after posing together at the press boards for celebs and VIPs at the new arena.

Ricky posted pics from the arena and said in his post: "Great night with claire @claire.sweeney tonight at the pre opening of the fantastic new @thecooplive in Manchester. @officialrickastley was awesome the legend. Brill night all round." Claire, who stunned in a white one-shoulder jumpsuit, also shared her own photos from the event and said: "Great night watching Rick Astley at new Co-op Live Arena with Ricky Hatton."
