Speaking to Digital Spy and other media about the storyline, Paula revealed that fans often try to warn her about Stephen.

"They say things like, jokingly sometimes: 'You want to stay away from that Stephen!' And women say: 'He's so bad!'

"My reaction is just like Elaine's would be: 'Oh, he's lovely! He's a really nice man! He's polite and kind. What's the matter with you?' So I put it right back on them," she explained.

The soap star also pointed out how Stephen never shows his evil side to Elaine because he "wants something out of her."

Although she says some fans enjoy it when she plays along, Paula revealed that others get a "bit disgruntled" and think: "'Gosh, this woman is really stupid!'"

Going on to discuss how she felt after discovering she was involved in this storyline, Paula shared: "It's a great story and I was really pleased because I felt like it was something I could enjoy and get my teeth into. I really liked the idea of being involved.

"I thought it was really interesting because it was all happening very naturally," she continued. "I'd heard about the story and thought it was simply fantastic that the audience knew this other side of him that nobody else on the Street knew."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
