Coroner: Minersville woman killed in boating accident
Apr. 21—POINT TOWNSHIP — A 37-year-old Minersville woman died following a boating incident in the Susquehanna River on Saturday night.
Melissa Cummings was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m. at Evangelical Hospital, in Lewisburg, by Union County Coroner Dominick Adamo, the coroner said Sunday morning.
Emergency responders were first called for a water rescue on the Susquehanna River around 7:50 p.m., according to officials.
Responders made their way to Silo Lane, Union Township, for reports of a capsized boat and a woman in the water, officials said.
Crews from Union and Northumberland counties used water rescue boats in the search. Around 9:10 p.m., rescue crews located the woman and began life-saving measures, officials said.
The woman was taken to Evangelical Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to officials.
Adamo said the cause of death was accidental.
Union Township Fire Chief Rick Wetzel said the boat the woman was in was found underwater about a mile south of the boat launch under the route 147 bridge.
