Coronation Street airs a dark new twist next week as Pat Phelan follows through with his threats to take another hostage.

Phelan has spent the past few days promising to replace his current prisoner Andy Carver down in the cellar, which is terrible news for one of his enemies.

It turns out that Phelan is deadly serious about this plan, as next week's episodes see him go through with targeting the unlucky individual in question.

This big week of Corrie is so dramatic that many of the details are being kept under wraps for now, including the identity of the victim.

However, show insiders have revealed that old ghosts will come back to haunt Phelan – threatening his future in Weatherfield and the life of any residents who attempt to stand in his way.

When Phelan takes his next hostage, he sees it as the perfect chance to carry out his revenge against someone who has wronged him.

Corrie fans have been left on tenterhooks to find out whether Phelan is planning to kidnap Daniel Osbourne, Vinny Ashford, Gary Windass, Anna Windass or someone else entirely.

Phelan's own daughter Nicola Rubinstein is another possible victim in the mix, as she starts asking some uncomfortable questions about his murky past after her strange meeting with old family friend Lydia.

As the tense week of drama comes to a head, Phelan snaps and makes a final decision about the future of his hostages – but what does it mean for Andy and prisoner number two?

Connor McIntyre, who plays Phelan, revealed: "If he is thinking about a replacement, it must be like a Smörgåsbord for him at the moment. He is feeling the pressure but that is when he acts, that is when he is at his most dangerous.

"When things are all cool, we see him very benign. But when the heat gets turned up for him, he gets more decisive in his actions and actually, he starts to see things very clear.

"When Phelan makes his final decision about his hostages, it's the darkest side we've seen of Phelan to date – but he can go darker, I am sure of that. If you cross a particular line, that's it. So can he get darker? Yes, certainly."

Asked why Phelan is suddenly turning against Nicola too, Connor replied: "Nicola has been trawling back through Phelan's history so, in short, she is starting to present a different picture to Pat than he has of himself and when you are dealing with a narcissist that is always very difficult.

"He has just found Nicola, she has had this really calming influence on him and he sees the prospect that he might lose her, so again, that makes him very volatile.

"So that's now in the mix as part of the pressure and you add on to that Daniel sniffing around, Eileen being oblique, Anna there in the background... the pressure is mounting."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
