Coronation Street's Sarah Platt has been an almost permanent fixture on the cobbles for 30 years now, with Tina O'Brien playing her on and off since 1999.

And the actress says she can still remember finding out that she'd got the part like it was yesterday.

"I remember the auditions very, very clearly and then the call saying I'd got it," she told the Sunday Post.

"My mum took it and I was both over the moon and crying, because I knew my life was going to change."

And she was right – Tina ended up playing Sarah through some of the soap's most famous storylines, including Sarah becoming a teenage mother.

She decided to quit the soap in 2007 and took on roles in dramas Blue Murder, Waterloo Road and Call the Midwife.

She also took part in Strictly Come Dancing, before returning to the cobbles in 2015 – with Tina saying that she needed to take the break in order to love Corrie even more.

"If I hadn't decided to leave when I did, I don't think I'd have appreciated everything since," she said.

"I came into Coronation Street right from high school and hadn't done anything else until I was 24. I didn't feel like I'd had a life outside the show.

"I needed to get out and see the world a bit, meet different people, try different jobs.

"I did a couple of period dramas and other things and having had those new experiences means I definitely don't have itchy feet now."

So it looks like Sarah is going to be sticking around on the cobbles – which is good news for her daughter Bethany, who's still recovering from her ordeal at the hands of evil Nathan Curtis.

Tina has a much calmer home life herself, having recently got engaged to her boyfriend Adam Crofts.

She and Adam have a two-year-old son named Beau, while Tina also has eight-year-old daughter Scarlett with former Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw).

And Tina couldn't be happier to be in a job where she can see her children every day.

"To be an actress, working in Manchester on a show I absolutely love is brilliant," she said.

"Then to be able to go home and be able to see my children every evening… well, I thank my lucky stars, to be honest with you.

"It's everything I want."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
