The Cotswold choir celebrating a milestone anniversary

A community choir based in the Cotswolds are due to mark an important anniversary for 2024. Called the Cirencester Singers it was ten years ago in 2014 when Musical Director Amy Garry started the choir with her friend Suzanne.

The story involves Amy studying BA Music at the University of Leeds, becoming a qualified teacher, teaching music at secondary schools and also becoming Head of Music at Cirencester Kingshill School between 2020 and 2022. Leading the Cirencester Singers today and marking the decade of singing is something Amy and the group will be celebrating with joy.

Singing a variety of music, Saturday July 6 will see the choir mark their special milestone with a concert at Cirencester Baptist Church. Performing songs with a live band and the premiere of the choir's own song called We're Not Alone, the night will be supporting the Churn Project, who support marginalised people across the Cirencester community.

With about 60 members plus a children's choir too for ages 8-16, Amy says the Cirencester Singers have gone from "strength to strength" over the decade.

"This is incredibly special to do a piece of music we have written and over ten years I've been really impressed by the members who have sung many songs, Amy said. I look back at the ten years and I think we've had to be very resilient especially during COVID. Singing two metres apart was tough but we have certainly retained so many members, new people too and we have grown via our concerts that are showpiece events every year."

Two members of the choir are Lisa and Sue. Speaking together on why they enjoy being part of the Cirencester Singers, they said: "To see how involved people have become with the choir is great to be a part of and is something well established. The effort Amy puts into the choir makes it a warm and friendly group and the choir makes us feel better and is uplifting. We wouldn't hesitate in encouraging others to join and yes it can be scary but only if you think about it too much. Everyone fits in!"
