Courtege of cabbies bid fond farewell to well-known Teesside taxi driver 'Davey'

A courtege of cabbies followed David Drury's hearse as a mark of respect to their pal and workmate.

More than a dozen taxis took part in the procession as the hearse made its way to St Nicholas Church in Guisborough for the service celebrating his life.

David, known to friends as Davey, had served the region as a taxi driver for 35 years and sadly died at the age of 64 following a battle with cancer. Jimmy Stubbs, a good friend and colleague, said the drivers all wanted to do their bit to show their respects to a 'really great' man.

David started his career with Kwik Cars and soon became a familiar face behind the wheel. His family said: "He lost his wife Pat in 2022, then lost his son, Davey, in 2023. Since then he'd never been the same. Then 13 weeks ago he found out he had cancer. Dave was a well liked by everyone and will be much missed."

David leaves behind his five other children, Paul, Michelle, Kerry, John and Danny and a host of grandchildren.

Jimmy said: "There was a massive turnout for his funeral. He was a proper family man. He would do anything for anybody. He was a really great bloke and an excellent taxi driver. He was a brilliant work colleague and will be missed by me and all the other drivers."
