A gurdwara in Coventry is offering free meals this month to honour those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Gurdwara Baba Vadbhag Singh Ji on Bayton Road is providing free hot meals daily from 4pm-6pm until June 15 for all individuals.

The BVS charity is providing meals (langar) as it says one of the main principles of Sikhism is to provide equality for all, regardless of their status, occupation, religion, gender, or wealth. The leader of the gurdwara, Baba Ji Kulvinder Singh, says the event echoes this belief and shows their dedication to supporting the local community during the cost-of-living crisis.

Gurdeep Kaur from Gurdwara BVS told ITV News Central that they aim to provide hot meals 24 hours a day. "Babaji is from the catering industry himself and ever since he started this establishment he wants to give out free food to anybody, he wants to help anyone that needs help," she said.

"The aim is to feed the homeless 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are trialling this from 4pm to 6pm every day and then after this week we want to go twenty-four-seven," she added.

Baba Ji's sole mission is to 'help anyone in need' and to 'put a smile on people's faces'. There will also be an annual free community fun fair on Father's Day from 11am to 5pm which will include rides, face painting, henna, and entertainment.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony, performed by the Bedworth Brass Band, where visitors will also have access to a range of stalls such as Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire Fire Services. "It's for anybody and everybody again, everything is free, the food, the rides for adults and children, the entertainment, the bouncy castles, and face-painting.

"They'll be so much more food on the day. It's for anyone and everybody.

"I can't stress that enough," Gurdeep said. In 2023, over 5,000 people attended the Father's Day event, with organisers expecting it to be even 'bigger and better' by delivering an 'enjoyable and interactive' event for 2024.
