The Rialto Plaza in Coventry is set to shut its doors come August, before it undergoes a major revamp to introduce a 'completely new offering.' The decision to close the venue comes as part of an effort to keep pace with the changing dynamics of the hospitality scene and the readers of Coventry Live have been discussing the past - and how the place should change when it reopens.

The closure signifies the end of an era for the beloved events space that has a host of great shows and events throughout its history.

A series of events will be held in July with the finale being the UB42 tribute act, who were one of the first bookings when the Coundon-based venue opened back in 2012. Rum and Reggae Live and a Dirty Dancing Party Night are also set to be held next month and will cost just £1 to attend.

Commenting on the venue's storied past, reader Hippy1 said: "This place has been many things over the years, bingo hall etc. My mum and auntie used to go dancing there at the end of the 40's etc. Good luck on your new adventure."

While Bandit Mk2 complained about the prices: "Try not to rip ppl off. £12 for 2 440ml cans is a joke."

Largie replied: "This is why I just don’t bother. While I understand venues are out to make money I’m not one for having ones pants pulled down at the bar."

While over on the Coventry Live Facebook page - Ben Knight said: "I went for my 1st time earlier this year for live music. Problem I found was the bench seating for what ought to have been a standing gig and it also seemed to be well under capacity. The gig was great, but the space/room seemed poorly used. Good luck to them. I'd go again as it's walkable for me."

Phil Smith commented: "Fingers crossed the venue continues."

Helen Kelly added: "If it's reopening then hopefully they change the seating back to lovely round tables and chairs rather than the awful beer Keller look! The atmosphere and the ambience isn't the same which puts a lot of people off wanting to go!"

While Darren James said: "I'm going to the 80's night in July. I hope its not the last time I will be going."

Martina Lobban added: "So it's not really closing its just changing, like it has done previously."

Emma Jayne Boss brought up a current issue: "Try letting people pay by cash as well as card would be a good idea may get more people in... I've heard loads of people say they have never been as card only within the building."

Darren Vel Satis said: "Problem is they have no parking." Mark Rowland replied with: "Always busy when I’ve been even with no parking."
