Failing to win on Monday night would not have ruled Leeds United out of the automatic promotion picture because of the crazy results still to come before May 5. That’s the view of Daniel Farke, who still feels there could be slip-ups for Leicester City and Ipswich Town before this race is run.

With three points at Riverside Stadium, Leeds moved back into the top two with the chance to extend their advantage over Ipswich to four points on Friday night. With the way the league table was looking before 8pm on Monday, it felt a win was needed for the Whites to assert themselves after one victory in their previous five outings.

However, when asked whether a draw or loss would have spelled the end for their top-two hopes, Farke did not feel that way. He still sees the possibility of their nearest rivals dropping points in surprising games before 2.30pm on May 4.

“It was an important game,” he said. “I never give up hope in this league, but also in football. As long as there is a chance with a few games to go, I will always go for it.

“I wouldn’t have said the chase for automatic promotion would have been over because this league is unpredictable and sometimes there are crazy results, but the three points are massive for us.

“Without them, it would be much more difficult to put pressure on the top two, so it was important. We’re back in the top two and it was important we won.”

Ipswich must watch Leeds play again at Queens Park Rangers on Friday night before travelling to play-off chasing Hull City at 8pm on Saturday. The Tractor Boys then take their second game in hand next Tuesday, at FA Cup semi-finalists Coventry City.

On the final day, Leeds host Southampton, Leicester host Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich host Huddersfield Town.
