Crowd Cheers Outside Court After Julian Assange Granted Fresh Appeal on US Extradition
A crowd of supporters cheered outside the High Court in London after Julian Assange was granted leave to mount a fresh appeal against his extradition to the US on Monday, May 20.
Assange was set to be extradited on charges of leaking military secrets, but will now be able to challenge assurances from American officials on how a trial there would be conducted.
Assange has been indicted on 17 espionage charges and one charge of computer misuse, exposing him to a maximum 175 years in prison, over his website’s publication of a trove of classified US documents almost 15 years ago.
