Crowd Flees as Catamaran Sail Flies Through Air at Sydney Sailing Event

Day two of the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix in Sydney Harbour was canceled following “significant damage” to some vessels on February 18, as strong winds battered the area, sending a sail from Team Canada’s boat flying into a tent.

Local media reported that the dramatic scenes at the SailGP event occurred as “gusty thunderstorms” hit the Sydney area, with power lines, trees, and traffic lights downed in the city.

This footage, captured by Sonya Thai, shows the Team Canada sail being blown wildly out of control while being lifted into the air by a crane, with people fleeing the area as the sail crashes into a temporary structure.

A SailGP statement said that to their knowledge “no one was seriously injured during the incident”. Credit: Sonya Thai via Storyful
