The Crowded Room's Emmy Rossum has shared her personal reasons for why the show's finale was especially emotional for her.

Rossum, who plays Candy Sullivan in the series, opened up to Digital Spy about the "very emotional" finale and pinpointed her character's exchange with son Danny (Tom Holland) in final episode of the psychological thriller as the one that really hit home.

"[While shooting] I also knew at that time that I was very, very early pregnant, and I knew that it was a boy," she said.

"So there was a lot for me of just like: 'Oh my God, this is the scene with the son, and I'm failing the son. I need to come clean about all the ways in which I let him down, and all the truths that I knew, and how I couldn't protect him, and didn't protect him, and failed as a mother.'

"So for me, I think there was so much first-trimester, hormonal mess for me, in that scene. It was very emotional," Rossum went on to reflect.

She and husband Sam Esmail (the mastermind behind Mr Robot) welcomed their second child, a baby boy, in April this year.

Further along, the former Shameless star answered whether or not there could be a reconciliation on the horizon for Danny and his mum.

"I have to hope that there is always hope and openness," she said. "I think, you know, sometimes there is too much damage in relationships.

"It does seem like there is always a part of us that wants to reconnect with a parent, and wants our parent to love us, and wants the ability to love our parent, no matter how much we’ve let each other down. I think that's just primal."
