Crowds Gather Before Dawn Ahead of Pope Benedict's Funeral

Mourners waited in darkness outside the Vatican on the morning January 5 for entry to the funeral service of former Pope Benedict XVI.

Video by Ann Haring shows those waiting for entry. Haring said the gates were opened around 7 am.

The funeral service began at 8:30 am. Afterwards, Benedict’s remains were due to be entombed in the Vatican Grottoes, underneath St Peter’s Basilica, alongside many of his papal predecessors. Credit: Ann Haring via Storyful
