“The Crown” Creator Addresses Princess Diana 'Ghost' Rumor in Season 6

Peter Morgan gave a glimpse of what's to come and how the late Princess of Wales is already making headlines

The Crown creator Peter Morgan is responding to a rumor about the spirit of Princess Diana in the next season.

In a new interview with Variety about the sixth and final installment of the hit drama inspired by the lives of the British royal family, the showrunner addressed reports from the Daily Mail that the “ghost” of the late Princess of Wales will be featured onscreen. Citing the Daily Mail, Variety reported that the upcoming season will see then-Prince Charles (Dominic West) speaking to an “imaginary Diana” (Elizabeth Debicki) during the plane ride when he accompanied her body from Paris to London, and that the late royal will appear to Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) elsewhere in the episode.

“I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense,” said Morgan, 60, in a Variety cover interview published Wednesday. “It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively.”

The Princess of Wales died in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997, after being chased by photographers in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. PEOPLE previously confirmed that the moment of impact will be excluded from season 6 of The Crown, which premieres two parts on November 16 and December 14 — the first split format for the series since its debut in 2016.

Variety reported that Morgan “feared writing Princess Diana into the series and even considered avoiding her entirely,” adding that The Crown creator was insistent her tragic death would not be seen on screen.

“Oh, God, we were never going to show the crash. Never,” he told the outlet.

On Oct. 9, Netflix announced that the last chapter of The Crown would hit queues in a split format for the first time. Part 1 will feature four episodes and focus on the events surrounding Diana’s tragic death, while part 2 will star six episodes and conclude multiple storylines, the streamer said in a statement.

Netflix said that part 2 will depict Queen Elizabeth reflecting on her reign and the future of the monarchy, and see Prince Charles and Camilla (Olivia Williams) take the next step in their relationship. Meanwhile, sparks are expected to fly on campus between Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy), who cross paths as students at the University of St. Andrews.

While the show's finale remains a royal mystery, Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria praised the powerful way Morgan wrapped up the epic saga, which has won hundreds of awards and been recognized on both sides of the pond.

“Peter did such an amazing job at weaving all of these stories together and really leaving us with such a powerful emotional ending,” the executive told Variety. “It really does give you the feeling of honoring the queen’s entire reign.”
