‘The Crown’s’ Final Season Will Be Split Into Two Parts

Netflix has announced a premiere date for the sixth and final season of The Crown — but it won’t be debuting all at once.

As it’s done with several series in the past year and change, the streamer will split The Crown’s last run into two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on Nov. 16, with part two — six episodes — following four weeks later on Dec. 14. Netflix has similarly split up the runs of the most recent seasons of Stranger Things, You and The Witcher — which like The Crown are among the more popular shows on the platform.

Netflix also released a short teaser for the season (watch it below), looking back at the life of Queen Elizabeth II (played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in earlier seasons) before settling on Imelda Staunton’s current incarnation of the British monarch. After a voiceover from Colman saying being queen “is not a choice; it is a duty,” Staunton’s voice wonders, “But what about the life I put aside?”

The final season of the series will cover the years 1997-2005. Part one will depict the relationship between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) and the 1997 car crash in Paris that killed them. Part two will feature the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams), while also focusing on Charles’ sons, William (Ed McVey) and Harry (Luther Ford).

“I am really, really proud of this final season. I think it’s some of our best work,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie told The Hollywood Reporter in August. “Imelda is extraordinary as the queen, she really is. And I don’t want to spoil the very end, but it’s really beautiful and, I think, quite profound, and it feels like a culmination of a very long journey.”

The Crown has won 21 Emmy Awards over its previous five seasons, including a best drama series trophy for season four. Series creator Peter Morgan executive produces with Mackie, Andy Harries, Stephen Daldry, Matthew Byam Shaw and Robert Fox.
