Crunch nine days ahead as tough Newcastle decisions to be made and popular stars may leave

Newcastle United are facing a hectic week of big decisions as they look to shape their squad for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

With the Premier League's PSR health check deadline looming, the Magpies must ensure their books are in a good place in time for June 30. Clubs can only make a loss of £105m over a three-year cycle and Newcastle do not want to suffer the same fate as Everton or Nottingham Forest who had points docked last season.

That is the priority from Newcastle's money men before the Magpies can start to attack the current summer window. It means the next nine days could be critical for the futures of players such as Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Martin Dubravka and Yankuba Minteh who could all be sold. United have a cash purchase to push through imminently in the shape of Lewis Hall and must balance their finances accordingly.

The coming days should also determine whether Newcastle will sell an Academy product and decide whether to make a sale that would give them 100% profit going into the hectic part of the window. Eddie Howe is still eager to sign two or three new faces at St James' Park but knows that he must be realistic with outgoing business a huge factor.

CEO Darren Eales is at the centre of Newcastle's transfer business with no sporting director in place. Eales had said last year: "If we’re going to get to where we want to get to, at times, it is necessary to trade your players.

"Under FFP, if you sell a £50m player and bring in an identical one on £50m and the same wages, but amortise over the five years the player you are bringing in, that's only £10m a year so you are creating £40m of headroom."

Howe has already experienced a dose of reality this summer when initially submitted both Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie on his original squad wishlist for 2024/25. But as Newcastle work diligently behind the scenes on finances Howe was told it wasn't possible this year, unlike 12 months ago.

Howe fought to keep Kieran Trippier last January when a bid of £12million came in for Kieran Trippier last season from Bayern Munich. But holding on to players who will see their value drop in the next couple of years may no longer be feasible for the head coach.

The former AFC Bournemouth boss said then: "You are seeing numbers in the media and thinking it is potentially good value for Kieran but when you are in our shoes and you see the actual breakdown, it is not good value at all. "It would have been a poor decision to accept it."
