Crystal Palace power play that could lead Newcastle United to £60million rethink

Newcastle United chiefs are closely monitoring the Michael Olise situation at Crystal Palace. Just 12 months ago, Palace inserted a £60million release clause, only open to certain clubs, to protect their asset after Olise signed a new deal at Selhurst Park.

As clubs begin to circle for Olise again, with Newcastle thought to be on the list of potential suitors, Palace are trying to do likewise this summer.

Palace remain vulnerable to losing Olise but are keen to offer the winger a new improved deal which would include a new release clause, taking the escape option up to £100m. It remains to be seen whether Olise actually signs the new deal with Chelsea showing a big interest in the star too, but it could see Newcastle priced out of negotiations.

The Magpies have a limited budget and must cut their cloth accordingly unless there are a spate of departures before the transfer window gets into its full swing. Howe rates the winger highly and is keen on a new wide man, especially if Miguel Almiron leaves in the summer trading period.

But so far Newcastle have not had any satisfactory offers for any of the players who are deemed as potential departures. A lack of European football at St James' Park has affected Newcastle's spending powers slightly with the release of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie an early indicator that there is no unlimited resources when it comes to the wage bill.
