Yahoo News Dad Refuses to Shell Out $200K for His Daughter’s Wedding and Now They Aren’t Speaking
"My daughter is getting married, and she wishes to have a destination wedding and [I] told her no," a dad wrote on Reddit
A dad and his daughter are no longer speaking after he refused to give her thousands of dollars for her wedding.
According to a post on Reddit, the dad, who remains anonymous, shared that his daughter asked him for $200K to pay for her dream destination wedding in New Zealand.
"My daughter is getting married, and she wishes to have a destination wedding and [I] told her no," he wrote in the initial post. "My wife feels I should do it because we can afford it, but I find it to be a pointless showing of wealth."

"Now my daughter is not talking to me, nor is my wife. Which got me thinking should I bite the bullet and essentially burn money, and alienate family members to make my daughter's dream wedding a reality?" he continued.
It's been a month since the dad posted and the thread's gone viral with over 4,000 comments sharing advice for the dad on what he should do in the situation. One person responded: "If she can’t pay for a destination wedding on her own, then she shouldn’t be having a destination wedding."
"It seems cruel but it’s true. Not to mention there’s so much more money involved with the flights and the hotels and stuff," the person continued. "Is she going to be paying for her own ticket or are you expected to fork out for them too? And her fiancée's ticket."
The dad also explained in the comments that the guest list would be large on both sides of the family. So, it would be a "large" wedding, he writes.
The father has since gone back to add into the post that in addition to paying this amount of money, guests would also have to spend their own money on travel plans. He also noted that the family is from New York.

"It is 100% a destination wedding she wants to get married in NZ. They are invited but the price excludes them, many of our family cannot afford to fly, let alone stay in NZ. Some of our family members don't even have passports or have [ever] left the country," the dad replied to the comment.
"Yes, I told her I would pay for her wedding, but [I] never agreed to pay for a destination wedding," he continued.
One user suggested the couple get married in New York, and instead go to New Zealand for their honeymoon. While others suggested that since the dad said he would pay for the wedding, the daughter should get the ceremony she wants.
In an edit to the post, the man revealed he's presented his daughter with an ultimatum: "Tomorrow I am going to start making phone calls to price what a wedding in NY would cost at different head counts from 100 to 200 people," he wrote.
"After I get that information I will use that to make an informed choice, but it will be an either or situation," the dad continued. "Because they are playing this game I will tell both of them, my wife and daughter, that it is a wedding or house."
