Dane Fischer is out as William & Mary men's basketball coach after five seasons

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — William & Mary has fired men's basketball coach Dane Fischer after five seasons.

Athletic director Brian D. Mann made the announcement Sunday, praising Fischer for his character and integrity, but adding, “As a university, we hold ourselves to the highest standards and are committed to competitive excellence in all our varsity athletics programs.”

Named the Coastal Athletic Association coach of the year in his first season after leading the Tribe to a 21-11 record and second-place finish in the league, Fischer went 56-91 over five seasons, including 32-50 in CAA play.

A search for his replacement is underway.

William & Mary is one of about three dozen teams that never have qualified for or been selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
