Netflix's Dark Season 2 has begun production, and – to celebrate – the streaming service has revealed what we can expect from the opening scene of the time-twisty German thriller.

The new season will only have eight episodes this time around and is expected to introduce new characters, along with time levels placed in the past and future.

Dark's first season followed four families in the fictional German town Winden, as they investigated the disappearance of several children and a mystery that ties back to the same town in 1986, as well as a local nuclear power plant.

The finale of season one left us with more questions than answers, including that shocking finale which we discuss in more depth here.

Now the first page of season two's script confirms it'll open with scenes set in 1921 along with a new modern day time period of 2020. The script also hints at different inserts from June 21, 1954, 1987 and in 2020.

Big questions we hope to be resolved include why exactly Michael killed himself - and why he's always drenched in icky black goo when Jonas sees him. Plus, what exactly is Father Noah up to (aside from all that kidnap and murderising, of course)?

Meanwhile fans will also hope for an answer to why Winden looked so post-apocalyptic when Jonas Kahnwald is there in 2052. The show teased more of Jonas adapting to his grubby home with two new images back in April.

Sadly, we don't have an official release date for Dark season 2, but mid-2019 seems likely.

Dark season one is available on Netflix now.
