Greater Manchester Police has solved nearly 50 per cent more crimes in the last year compared to three years ago, according to new figures. The force said they have 'driven down' crimes such as burglary, violent crime, and theft, while arrests have increased.

Recently Home Office crime figures for 2023 also show GMP have solved double the amount of rape offences than during the previous year, and increased domestic abuse arrests by 90 per cent.

The force said their performance is 'ahead of the national trend' and is 'rapidly improving' after a 'back to basics' approach to policing. It comes after they were placed into 'special measures' between 2020 and 2022.

In the year up to March 2024 the data shows they solved 48% more crimes compared to three years ago, and have arrested twice as many suspects since March 2021.

The force also pointed to commitments such as attending every residential burglary, which was made in July 2021, and has seen them solve 77 per cent more burglary offences.

They said over the last year, burglary reports have fallen by 24 per cent, robbery reports by 10.3 per cent, vehicle crime by 18.2 per cent, violent crime by 6.4 per cent, and theft by 4.8 per cent.

GMP added they have also made progress around road safety, with 11,000 vehicles 'unfit' for roads seized in the last year, and fatalaties reducing by almost one third.

Domestic abuse arrests have increased by almost 90 per cent, and domestic violence is down by 14.5 per cent, according to the data. Over the last 12 months, the force also doubled the number of rape cases solved.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson said: “Our overall performance is ahead of the national trend. We are proud to be a force for the people of GM which is widely recognised as rapidly improving and is on its way to being one of the best in the country.

“Our capability, resilience and professional endeavour has led to this speedy turnaround. We have proud and committed officers and staff who are doing what the public expect of us: to pick up the phone and respond quickly, to record crime faithfully, to investigate reasonable lines of enquiry, to protect victims and pursue suspects, and to fight, prevent and reduce crime.

“It is clear that in a vast majority of areas, we are bringing more criminals to justice and less crime is happening. This is better for victims, for communities, and for the decent hard-working people of GM.

“Every day and night our officers and staff work professionally and diligently to keep our communities safe. We will not relent on our journey to keep improving our prevention of crime, protection of people, and tackling of criminals, and we will continue to be a force for good for all of Greater Manchester.”
