When it comes to some of the best mother and daughter activities to enjoy, getting your hair done together has to be up there.
But because my daughter is only three, it will be a good few years until highlights and hair dyeing comes into the mix - so when I heard about the new hair braiding salon that had opened in Grimsby, I was keen to give it a go.
Situated at 17 Freeman Street, Braid Station was opened last month by former teacher Charlotte Wright, who decided to take the leap and incorporate everything she knew from teaching Business Studies, and open her own business doing what she loves.

The niche salon offers a huge range of braid options, from everyday French and Dutch braids to more eclectic and colourful festival styles, box braids and even dreadlocks. Depending on people's tastes and preferences, there's probably thousands of individual options in terms of the braids, style and colours involved.
So, keen to not have to straighten my hair for a couple of days, and with a very excited little one in tow, we headed to Braid Station on a sunny Tuesday evening to get our hair braided together.
The salon itself is a little girl's dream, with the floral mural on the windows, the huge wall of colourful hair, girlie products on sale and touches of pink and animal print everywhere you look.
My daughter went first, and we decided on two Dutch braids with light pink woven throughout. I didn't know Dutch braids were even a thing before, to be honest - they're very similar to French braids, but the hair sits more on top of the head in a 3D style, rather than underneath.
Charlotte started by separating the hair and adding lots of gel to ensure the style stayed in place, and braided the hair whilst simultaneously weaving the pink "hair" into it. It took about 15 minutes in total, and I was glad my daughter - aka the biggest fidget-bum - managed to sit still through it.
She also loved being able to choose a couple of little charms to accessorize the braids, and chose two little unicorns that finished the look and made her look even more adorable.
Next, it was my turn. I wanted something very classic and not too "in your face" so I went for two standard French braids. Mine took about 20 minutes, and I was pleased with the final result.
The price came to £35 in total (£20 for me and £15 for my daughter), so it's not really something you can do every single week, but it was a lovely little pick-me-up experience.
I'd recommend going to Braid Station for something fun and girlie to do, whether with a loved one or for a spot of "me time". Plus, with the weather getting warmer, braids are a great option for a low-maintenance, summer hairstyle.
