Sir David Attenborough has joined Instagram and naturally has over a million followers on his first day on the platform. But he's joined for one very specific goal.

With help from colleagues Jonnie and Colin, who worked with Attenborough on A Life On Our Planet, the documentary maker will be sharing important instructive videos.

In the first of these videos Attenborough explained why he's joined the app and what followers can expect.

"My name is David Attenborough," he began, continuing: "I've been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram. And I'm making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me, because as we all know, the world is in trouble.

"Continents are on fire, glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying, fish are disappearing from our oceans; the list goes on and on."

But the video was not all doom and gloom, as the beloved natural historian is intent on helping guide us to right the wrongs.

Telling his new followers: "But we know what to do about it. And that's why I'm tackling this new way, for me, of communication. Over the next few weeks I'll be recording messages to explain what the problems are, and how we can deal with them."

Filmmakers Jonnie and Colin will also be sharing exclusive content and behind the scenes clips while running the account.

They explained in the caption: "David Attenborough has spent a lifetime travelling, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder.

"He’s also witnessed the damaged caused. Saving our planet is now a communications challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will.

"That’s why we want to share this message on Instagram. Because there is hope and together, we can inspire change."

While most of us are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, and making better and better choices in our lives and as consumers, there is so much more to be done.

If anyone can help us all get our acts together, it's Sir David Attenborough, and he has faith in us to collectively start doing right by the planet. So get following!
