David Fincher’s ‘The Killer’ Joins New York Film Festival’s Spotlight Slate

The New York Film Festival has added David Fincher’s The Killer to its spotlight selection for its 2023 edition.

The pulpy drama that stars Michael Fassbender as an unsettled assassin will screen on Oct. 14 at the Paris Theater and a day later at the Walter Reade Theater. Fincher’s film about a titular assassin (Fassbender) who gets embroiled in an international manhunt after a previous job that went wrong bowed in competition in Venice and is set for a streaming launch on Netflix on Nov. 10.

Fincher directs from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven), and the project counts Ceán Chaffin as a producer. The Killer adapts the graphic novel series of the same name from writer Alexis Nolent (aka Matz) and illustrator Luc Jacamon that was initially published in French by Editions Casterman.

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival’s Spotlight section will also feature a gala screening of Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, world premieres of Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie’s Showtime series The Curse starring Emma Stone, and Garth Davis’ Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal-starrer Foe.

Other Spotlight selections include the U.S. premieres of Hayao Miyazaki’s first film in a decade, The Boy and the Heron, and Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, co-written by and starring Glen Powell as a philosophy professor who moonlights as an undercover hit man for the New Orleans Police Department.

The festival, which is set to open Friday with May December and close with Ferrari and show Priscilla as its centerpiece screening, will also feature the North American premiere of Sean Price Williams’ feature debut The Sweet East, starring Talia Ryder, Simon Rex, Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy O. Harris, and a late-night screening of Harmony Korine’s Aggro Drift, shot entirely in infrared.

The 61st New York Film Festival is set to run from Sept. 29-Oct. 15.
