Dawn French and Hugh Grant are paying tribute to late Vicar of Dibley and Notting Hill actress Emma Chambers after it was confirmed earlier today (February 24) that she had passed away from natural causes at the age of 52.

In a statement obtained by Digital Spy, Dawn said; "Emma was a very bright spark and the most loyal & loving friend anyone could wish for. I will miss her very much."

The two worked together on The Vicar of Dibley for 20 episodes of the much loved BBC comedy between the years of 1994 and 2007.

Emma starred as the lovably ditzy verger Alice Tinker who was Dawn's character Geraldine Grainger's right-hand woman.

The twosome were well-loved by fans for the series' iconic end scene after every episode, where the vicar and Alice would share a joke at the end of the show (which Alice rarely understood).

Hugh also shared a heartfelt message for the actress on Twitter.

"Emma Chambers was a hilarious and very warm person and of course a brilliant actress. Very sad news," he tweeted.

In addition to Dawn and Hugh, a slew of others have all paid tribute to the late actress across social media, including Jeremy Clarkson and Carol Vorderman.

Emma Freud, partner of Richard Curtis who directed Notting Hill and produced Vicar of Dibley wrote; "Our beautiful friend Emma Chambers has died at the age of 53. We're very very sad. She was a great, great comedy performer, and a truly fine actress. And a tender, sweet, funny, unusual, loving human being."
