Dead grass patches can look unattractive in summer, but one gardening expert has shared the ultimate trick for sorting out unsightly brown laws with "instant results".

As Wimbledon fever grips the nation, all eyes are on the iconic grass courts, which are prepped to perfection 15 months in advance. In preparation of the tournament, a whopping nine tonnes of grass seed is sown annually.

Yet the unpredictable British weather, coupled with the wear and tear from pets, kids, and garden furniture, can leave our own patches of green looking rather worse for wear.

Brown and yellow spots on the turf are a frequent headache for green-fingered enthusiasts, often the result of fungal infections, pet urine, dry spells, or misapplied feed.

In light of this, the green-thumbed pros at Yell have chatted with Simon Akeroyd, a seasoned gardener and landscaper, who's let slip his top tip for "instantly" remedying brown patches on lawns, reports the Express.

Patchy, thinning grass is no stranger to many a garden, sometimes even leading to gaping holes that mar the lawn's appearance. Simon advises that when these issues crop up, the most "efficient" solution is to sprinkle some lawn seed.

He recommends: "Sowing seeds for small patches is a cheap and efficient way to fix any patches in your lawn.

"The best time to do this is late summer/early autumn, or in the spring, as they will require less watering. However, you may need to protect grass seed from birds."

Although Simon noted that for those seeking quicker outcomes, laying down turf is the superior method, explaining: "You will get faster, more instant results if you lay turf down over the patches.

"However, this does require more watering if the weather is dry, which is more expensive."

To maintain the prime condition of your lawns, it's essential to carry out regular maintenance including overseeding, aerating, scarifying and feeding.
