Looking for a smart TV upgrade that won’t break the bank? This 32-inch JVC is a very clever buy.

Powered by Google, it’s currently available for just £199.99 at Currys PC World, down from £249.99 - that's a saving of fifty quid on its list price.

The JVC brand (licensed exclusively by Currys PC World in the UK) has made a niche for itself with affordable connected TVs built around the Amazon Fire TV platform, but here it leans on Google, and its popular Android TV OS, for streaming services and apps.

I reckon that’s good news.

I’ve become quite a fan of the Google TV platform. It’s feature rich, but easy to live with. There’s also no shortage of streaming TV services to choose from. All the big names are here, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube, but there are plenty of lesser known apps to explore as well.

As befits a connected Android TV set, this 2021 model also works with Google Assistant, so voice control with enhanced search is available as standard. Chromecast built-in makes it a doddle to share images and videos from your smartphone.

It’s worth noting that the LT-32CA690 is HD Ready, which means resolution is pegged at 720p rather than Full HD or 4K. This isn’t uncommon at this screen size. At normal viewing distances, you probably wouldn’t be able to spot the drop in resolution on a panel this size anyway.

The tuner is Freeview Play, which means all the major channel catch-up TV players are integrated, including BBC iPlayer, C4, My5, ITVHub and UKTVPlay. A scroll back 7 day programme guide allows you to look back and spot what programmes you’ve missed. There’s also a whole lot of free to watch box sets available via Freeview Play.

Connectivity is good. The set offers three HDMI inputs, making it easy to hook-up your set top TV box, games console or disc player. One of the HDMI inputs is ARC (Audio Return Channel) enabled, which means you can also quickly attach a soundbar for more cinematic sound. This is definitely worth planning for, as the audio quality on inexpensive TVs like this is inevitably average.

The set is light, at 3.5kg - so you might want to consider wall-mounting. You’ll need to invest in an optional wall mount.
