A dentist has warned people to stop flossing their teeth with their own hair amid a bizarre social media trend. Videos started to circulate on TikTok, demonstrating how to use a strand of your hair to remove unwanted bits of food from in between your teeth.

With many people hailing it as a great hack, experts disagree with dentists warning against using anything other than dental floss - or interdental brushes - in between your teeth, claiming it could cause long-term issues.

Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, warned: “Flossing is very important to your oral health. Everyone should be flossing anytime they brush their teeth because brushing alone will never remove all the build up of food and bacteria.

“However, you should only ever use dental floss or interdental brushes. Using other materials, like hair, cotton or string could cause trauma to your gums resulting in long-term damage."

He stressed that whilst social media can be great, some aspects of social media can be dangerous when such trends take off.

He explained: “Social media can be a great tool for learning, however when I see trends like this it concerns me - always check with your dentist before trying something you have seen on the internet.

“And please don’t pull hair out of your head to use in your mouth - not only is it gross but it can be harmful.”

The NHS and dentists suggest using floss or interdental brushes as part of your dental hygiene routine from the age of 12.

The Dr continued: "Interdental brushes are the ideal - they are specifically designed to clean the plaque between the teeth and can be purchased in the size that fits.

"They should feel snug, however if you really can't fit them between your teeth then floss is the next best thing."
