Deputies Use Snowmobiles to Check On Snowed-in California Residents

Heavy snow shut down highways in California’s Placer County on Tuesday, February 28, as a storm dumped as much as 24 inches of snow in parts of the state, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

Video from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office shows deputies on snowmobiles in the Applegate area on Tuesday. According to the department, Interstate 80 was shut down in both directions with no alternate routes.

The NWS warned that blizzard conditions in the Sierra Nevada would cause “extreme travel impacts,” reporting several feet of snow in the forecast for areas above 2,000-3,000 feet, with snowfall rates potentially higher than 3 inches an hour. Credit: Placer Sheriff via Storyful
