Deputy Struck by Driver on Snowy Iowa Freeway

Police in central Iowa appealed to motorists to “slow down” when they see flashing lights after reporting that a deputy was struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded driver on a snow-covered Interstate 80 on Saturday, March 11.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Brandon Bjoin was helping a motorist who was stuck on the median when a vehicle behind him crashed into the median and “sideswiped” Bjoin, striking his right arm and knocking him to the ground.

This video released by the sheriff’s office shows Bjoin’s bodycam footage from the March 11 incident.

Bjoin was transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines and was “extremely lucky” to have escaped with just bruising to his arm, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We hope this serves as a reminder to all motorists to slow down when you see flashing lights and to use caution in winter driving situations,” the sheriff’s office said. Credit: Dallas County Sheriff (Iowa) via Storyful
