Derek Jacobi has joined the cast of Good Omens as Metatron, or the Voice of God.

The acclaimed and best-selling novel, co-written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, is being adapted by Gaiman for a six-part miniseries for Amazon Prime.

Jacobi joins the previously announced David Tennant, Michael Sheen and Jon Hamm for the show, which is due to air in 2019.

Gaiman announced the news himself by sharing a picture on Twitter of himself with Jacobi in front of a trailer marked "Metatron".

"Here is a photograph of the Metatron's trailer," he said.

"Next to it is a very rumpled showrunner. Next to it is our Metatron, an unrumpled Sir Derek Jacobi. 'It's not every day you get to play the Voice of God,' he said. #GoodOmens."

Jacobi is a founding member of the Royal National Theatre and is also celebrated for his Shakespeare performances on stage and screen.

He has also appeared in films like Gladiator and The King's Speech and also played Yana/The Master in Doctor Who.

Good Omens is set in 2018 as the world prepares itself for an apocalypse. However as the end is near, an angel named Aziraphale and a demon named Crowley attempt to obstruct it from happening.

Former Doctor Who and Broadchurch star David Tennant will play Crowley, while Michael Sheen will play Aziraphale.

Ex-Mad Men lead Jonn Hamm will play the archangel Gabriel.

After its launch on Amazon Prime, Good Omens will be shown at a later date on BBC Two.
