A concerned Rangers fan has urged the board to consider appointed Derek McInnes as manager after defeat to Celtic on Saturday.

However, Philippe Clement found a surprise ally in Parkhead hero Sutton who defend his record as Light Blues' boss to a caller on BBC 606. The Belgian failed to secure his first Old Firm victory since arriving in the Ibrox hot seat during the crucial clash at Celtic Park - which saw the Hoops' move six points clear at the top of the table with just two Scottish Premiership games left to play.

It would take a major collapse from Celtic for Rangers to lift the title this term - and one punter reckons that the Kilmarnock boss should be next on the list of managerial targets. McInnes was previously approached over becoming Rangers boss back in 2017 while in charge of Aberdeen, but he would sensationally exit talks to become Pedro Caixinha's successor at the 11th hour.

But that didn't deter caller Jonny. He was asked by Hoops' legend Sutton: "Do you still have hope any hope for the league? The hope is gone for the league...?"

The caller cut in: "Oh, the league is over. Even before yesterday's game I wasn't hopeful - I haven't been hopeful for Rangers or Celtic in such a long time. I am honest enough to say that. Before you sit down to watch a Rangers match nowadays you know it's going to be a struggle. Not just against Celtic but against smaller teams. You are dreading sitting down to watch them."

Sutton attempted to make a case for the boss. He said: 'What needs to happen, Jonny? I mean with Philippe Clement he has got every last ounce out of this group of players, I think. He does deserve credit for Rangers even being in this position doesn't he?"

The caller responded: "He does, but it seems to have been groundhog day since (Steven) Gerrard left. I was a big fan of Gio van Bronckhorst as a player but not as a manager. Then we had Mr Beale and I don't want to waste breath on him. Now Philippe Clement - but look I always have been a fan of McInnes.

"I know he turned them down but I really want Derek McInnes. He is Scottish, he is Rangers. he works on a shoestring budget all the time. I'm not saying it needs to be a managerial change, it just the summer clear out - the money they wasted last summer was absolute madness."

Sutton asked: "It's interesting you say about McInnes. Do you think Rangers would go back there? When I say go back he was very close to getting the job when he was at Aberdeen..."

Jonny rounded off pointing to a feeling of Deja vu after slumping to defeat in Glasgow's east end once again: "All we were told was that he was offered it and turned it down. I think eventually they are going to have to go back to McInnes. It just seems to be all these managers come in and do the job - then player Celtic and get beat. It's the same old story."
