Dermot O'Leary has spoken about his love of being on The X Factor, what it was like being fired from the show, and how Simon Cowell apologised to him about it.

In a chat with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Dermot said: "We had that conversation a while ago. He said sorry... as much as Simon can say sorry."

Dermot didn't seem too bitter about being let go for the 2015 series, when he was replaced by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack, joking about Simon's apology and how everyone working on the show loves doing it.

During his year away from X Factor, Dermot kept himself busy by writing children's book Toto the Ninja Cat and the Great Snake Escape, based on the pets that Dermot himself has owned over the years.

The star said he enjoyed doing something different, and about how people can be 'pigeon-holed' into 'one-lane' careers.

Caroline Flack herself recently spoke about being let go from The X Factor, saying that while it was "tough", she's fine about it.

"At the end of the day, it's not serious. I'm not saving lives. There are much bigger things going on in the world, far more important jobs," she admitted.

"I'm doing entertainment, and it's a brilliant but silly job. That's showbiz."
